IP-PBX Business Telephone Systems
Frequently Asked Questions
If I convert to VoIP and I have an emergency, will I not be able to reach or be located by a 911 service?
This is absolutely false. In the case of a network or internet failure, your system will always have a direct analog connection to the telephone company thereby insuring 911 service. This is not an internet call.
Do all of my calls go over the internet?
In most dial plans, a majority of calls will continue to go out the same telephone lines as they do currently. Calls between locations or branches will travel over the internet to eliminate long-distance and local toll charges. However, unless you have a VoIP long distance plan, local and long-distance calling will continue to travel out the same TELCO lines as they do today. It is possible to use a combination of VoIP long distance providers and traditional TELCO providers if there are saving to be achieved from such a system.
Is voice quality poor on VoIP systems?
With echo cancellation and balancing circuitry built into most quality phone systems, voice quality is now an issue of the past. It is still important to remember that this technology is delivering voice, video and data on a single network. This creates the need for new traffic rules on the network which can be provided by managed switches.
Can this technology be compromised by hackers?
Your network is only as secure as your security procedures and firewall protection. If you have an appropriate network security plan, the voice traffic will have the same protection as your data does today. A Voice over IP network is actually more secure than a standard digital telephone system.
If I put my voice traffic on my computer network, won't my network will really slow down?
Networking technology has improved substantially in recent years to the point where you can run voice, data, and video over the same network. The networking industry has developed technology that allows you to manage the network to support all three technologies that run concurrently with great performance. Network capacities have increased steadily over the years to keep up with the demand for bandwidth requirements. When considering implementation of an IP-PBX, using Voice over IP technology, that you consult a supplier such as VerCom Systems who has extensive knowledge in both voice and data technologies.
Isn't Voice over IP technology expensive to implement?
This was probably true several years ago, but today this technology is comparable in price to traditional telephone systems. Considering all the operational benefits achieved with the use of VoIP technology and the low cost of ownership, VoIP technology is rapidly becoming the price leader for telephone systems.
Do I need any telephone lines from my local telephone company if I install an IP-PBX?
An IP-PBX is not designed to eliminate your telephone lines that you use for communicating to the outside world. An IP-PBX, utilizing Voice over IP technology, enables you to use the Internet for interconnecting remote locations/branches or remote teleworkers with the home office. Because you are using the internet for the transport mechanism there are no fees or toll charges.
